Table Mountain Threw Me a Birthday Party – and You Can Have Your Event There Too!

 Yes, it was my birthday recently, and I wanted to go up Table Mountain because it’s free for South Africans on your birthday. I thought it would be nice to go up at the end of the day and watch the sunset but the rugby was on and Comair organised that super low flyover for me. (I think they thought I was in the stadium and they know what an adrenaline junky I am.)

Fortunately, a few days later on an evening with great weather, I was invited up not just for a sunset but for a whole event. 

The events team only invited two of my friends (hey, Elroy and Faud), but that’s because they know how much I like talking to strangers and making new friends. So if you didn’t get an invite, that’s why. Most of the people there were from tour or events companies. It was quite a strange coincidence that. 

They intentionally didn’t sing happy birthday or mention me in their speeches so not to make too much of a fuss, but my Table Mountain birthday party was lovely.  And if you're already starting to think about where to host your year-end function in Cape Town, this might be worth putting on the list.

What to Expect From an Event at VIEWS by De Grendel

The venue was beautiful. The relatively narrow space of VIEWS by De Grendel lives up to its name with windows running along one side, overlooking Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. One of the best sunset spots in the city, hands down. 

There was a long table down the middle where I got to sit and make new friends. There was a saxophonist who beautifully set the tone with live music accompanied by a backing track, and we could still comfortably hold a conversation over the music. The fynbos flower arrangements on the tables exquisitely caught the light of the setting sun. 

There was a bar serving some fun cocktails, wine and soft drinks. And despite having what I have heard is quite a small kitchen, the variety and quality of the food was next level. From finger foods like little chicken wraps and cheese balls, to mushroom pies and falafels, to bowls of chicken and pasta dishes, no one went hungry and everything was good. 

The highlight for my sweet tooth though, was the chocolate mousse served in an edible biscuit bowl. It was way better than a birthday cake (although I’m sure that could be arranged too). 

It was a bit nippy outside, being the first day of spring, but another highlight was watching the sunset from the terrace outside. Outdoor events can also be accommodated if the weather cooperates.
